Help send the UMiami American Society of Mechanical Engineers
to the International Submarine Races!

The ISR 14 challenge is to design, build and race a one- or two-person, human-powered submarine on an underwater course. We have approximately 30 students who will be working on a one-person submarine as a member of one or more of the following teams: Hull Design, Propulsion System, Navigation/Guidance System, Safety and Rule Compliance, Financing/Fundraising. Our team consists of students from multiple disciplines and grade levels. The last time the University of Miami competed was in 1997. Their submarine, Magnum Pi (2 person), came in 5th place overall for speed: 3.15 knots.

Meet Our Advisor:
Dr. Emrah Celik

Dr. Emrah Celik earned his doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona in 2010, specializing in nanofabrication and nanomechanics. After completing his PhD studies, Dr. Celik pursued postdoctoral training at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and applied his expertise in nanotechnology on biophysical characterization of proteins and tumor cells. He has been a faculty member of the University of Miami College of Engineering since 2014 and the advisor of the local chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers since the summer of 2016. Dr. Celik conducts research on biophysics-based cancer detection systems, thermoelectric generators, and renewable energy generation via organic waste recycling.
